A Scary Halloween

November 7, 2009

Matt and I spent Halloween in Orem helping out at my brother’s shop. My brother fell off a ladder a couple weeks ago and broke his humerus. When he fell he landed right on his back which might be why he was taken to the ER a week later with horrible abdominal pain. It turned out that one of his kidneys had swollen to the size of a football and was pressing on all his insides. He ended up having 1.5 liters of liquid drained from his kidney and a tube installed to continue draining the kidney into a bag. He’s going to have some more tests done to decide how well the kidney is functioning and whether it needs to come out or if it can be repaired. Either way, he will need surgery. The worst part is that he has no insurance (denied for pre-existing conditions) and most of the money the scooter shop has been making lately has been from repairs. With a broken arm and a tube sticking out of his back, Dave isn’t able to perform repairs at his normal speed.

Hulk smash!

While Matt and I were at the shop we received numerous phone calls and visits from concerned customers who had heard rumors of Dave’s injuries. Dave and his shop are clearly beloved by the community. I took some pictures around the shop. I love the Scooter Lounge and I hope that it will withstand all the hard times.

worst. year. ever.

Summer 2009 Top 3 (in no particular order):

1. Hiking through the Albion Basin wildflowers up to Catherine’s Pass a couple days after the wedding.

Bristlecone Pine

We hiked up to a glacier through a bristlecone pine forest. Bristlecone pines are the oldest living organisms on the Earth. Some are as old as 5000 years.

The next day we hiked to the top of Mt. Wheeler, and by “we” I mean the royal we. I didn’t quite make it to the top but I’m still quite proud that I made it as far as I did considering that I was sucking an inhaler all the way up (Thank you Jason). I made it to the saddle of the peak – about 11,660 ft. Mt. Wheeler is the 2nd highest peak in Nevada.

A fascinating study

I once dated a guy who, when I asked him what his favorite book was, promptly responded, “Uncle John’s Big Bathroom Reader Extraordinary Book Of Facts: And Bizarre Information” for real.

You can imagine how lucky I feel each time I walk into my bathroom and discover whatever new and random reading selection my brilliant Mr. Black has toted in for his perusal.

Whole Lotta Recap

September 10, 2009

The night before the wedding, I didn’t sleep at all. Not a wink. I couldn’t. I was so nervous.

It was shaping up to be a cold and cloudy day. This wasn’t ideal as the entire wedding and reception was supposed take place outside. Luckily Alta was able to roll with the punches and we were able to have our ceremony outside as planned and then the dinner and reception was set up inside. It ended up being absolutely perfect.

The highlights:

Gorgeous scenery

My glamour pit crew who did an amazing job making me look gorgeous

My brother and sister singing O Soave Fancuilla from La Boheme at the ceremony (I have an mp3 of the performance but couldn’t figure out how to get it to post, boo.)

The fantastic toasts given at the reception by Matt’s brother Nate, my brother Dave and my Dad.

Thank you everyone who helped out and everyone who came to celebrate with us and especially thanks to all who got down with us on the dance floor and the lovely and talented Danielle Mariott for getting pictures of it all!!!
